Darren Seabrook Honours B.Sc. Biology, University of Western Ontario, Canada. Advanced Chinese, DongHua University, Shanghai, China. Creator of LCFM. Hey, I'm Darren and I'm the creator of LearnChineseFromMovies. I'm from Canada and I've been in China for almost 6 years – working, learning, and travelling when I can. I created this program because I believe that learning languages from movies is the best way to learn a language. Of all my Chinese friends, the ones with the best English were those who watched American movies over and over again and tried to memorize many of the lines. Their English was even much better than my other Chinese friends who spent 4 years in university, majoring in English.
I tried to create a useful program so that anyone could learn Chinese from a Chinese movie. I thought I should choose a good film, so I'd might as well choose "The Best Chinese Film Ever Made". Now, I have expanded and cover 10 awesome movies. The method you see in this program is also what I used to learn Chinese with years ago. I liked to watch it on my iPod at the gym or on the subway and keep pausing it after every line, repeat it to myself, and try to memorize it as well as memorizing the Chinese characters.
I've found that the best way to learn Chinese characters really is to write them out. I found writing a bit boring at first because I didn't know what each part of the Chinese character represented. I found that very few people actually know all the parts of every characters and even fewer people bother to teach it. So I also created a little manual in this program that teaches you the system of how to dissect these characters, how to remember each part and thus remember them easily.
I've also included an animated writing program. I also added a ton of other features which are all mentioned on the home page. But to be honest, watching videos on the go with the special subtitles, writing out and understanding the components of each character, as well as chatting on MSN were all very powerful methods that helped me to become fluent in Chinese.
And all these methods are part of this program.
In my free time, I enjoy cooking at home for the gf, having a nice detox bath with those special salts, listening to sales and marketing books (especially books by Seth Godin) while at the gym, taking my laptop to Starbucks and learning more about website stuff, riding my bike to check out new places in Shanghai, travelling in China and Asia when I save up enough money, and dreaming about travelling to new exotic places and some day buying a house. Below are a couple pictures of me in Beijing and one in Hanzhou. I actually live in Shanghai, but I couldn't find any good pictures of me in Shanghai yet.
